ASYLUM

If you are interested in:

  • Working with asylees and refugees from the moment they first walk in to the EBSC until after they receive the results of their asylum application

  • Working primarily with clients from Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador whom have faced political-motivated violence, domestic violence, or persecution because of their sexual preferences

Asylum

Tasks:

  • ​Collecting basic documents and facts that are used along with comprehensive declaration created between the intern and client that explains why a client is afraid and unable to return to his or her home country

Time Commitments: 4hrs/week

Qualifications: Strong Spanish Speaking Skills Preferred​

DACA

DACA

If you are interested in:

  • Learn about DACA and its current legal challenges

Tasks:

  • ​Help EBSC DACA clients to renew their DACA application (until further notice)

  • Screen EBSC clients for alternative immigration relief options

  • File, archive and organize documents for EBSC staff related to DACA

  • Communicate with DACA clients via Google Voice 

Time Commitments: 4hrs/wk

Unaccompined Alien Children (UAC)

UAC

If you are interested in:

  • Interested in working with minors especially from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador

Tasks:

  • ​Schedule and conduct intake interviews in Spanish for our Unaccompanied Minors and parents. Also make copies of UAC documents at this time. All intakes will be reviewed by Liliana or Yuko before sending the client(s) home.

  • Schedule I-765 (work permit) appointments for UACs. All applications will be reviewed by Liliana or Yuko before mailing.

  • Occasionally file motions at the San Francisco Immigration Court (EBSC will cover BART cost)

  • Call the Automated Case Information Hotline once a week to see whether UACs awaiting a Master Calendar Hearing have been scheduled and notify Liliana or Yuko -- they will handle updating the spreadsheet and contacting the clients

Time Commitments: 4hr/week

Qualifications: Spanish

U-Visas

U-Visas

Tasks:

  •  Writing declarations

  • Putting U-Visa packets together

  • Translating

  • Phone banking

  • Organizing files

Time Commitments: 4hrs/wk

Qualifications: Strong Spanish Skills Preferred

Residency

Residency (Green Cards/Citizen Applications)

If you are interested in:

  • Understanding the legal processes of applying towards U.S. residency or citizenship

Tasks:

  • Working directly with clients under attorney supervision in filling out residency or citizenship applications

Time Commitments: 4hrs/wk

 

CDE

Community Development and Education (CDE)

If you are interested in:

  • Interested in working with community members outside of the EBSC

  • Event planning

Tasks:

  • ​Help organize various workshops

  • Translating

  • Phone banking  

  • Event planning

Time Commitments: 4hrs/wk

 

Citizenship Exam

Citizenship Exam

If you are interested in:

  • Teaching

Tasks:

  • ​Preparing clients to pass the mandatory exam proctored by U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in order to receive United States citizenship. Interns can work one on one and lead classes with clients preparing for the exam. Topics covered include United States government, history, and written/spoken English.

Time Commitments: 4hrs/wk

Qualifications: Strong Spanish Speaking Skills

ESL

English as a Second Language

If you are interested in:

  • Teaching English 

  • Preparing lesson plans

Tasks:

  • ​Each ESL student will be paired up with a tutor who will assist them weekly according to their needs

Time Commitments: 4hrs/week (hours depend on ESL students)
