Asylum/Refugee Rights
Positions Available:

2-3 Positions Available: Interpreting for Asylum Preparations (Hybrid: Virtual & In-Person)

1-2 Positions Available: Spanish Interpretation for Declaration and Asylum Interviews (Hybrid: Virtual & In-Person)

Time Commitments: 4hrs/week
Qualifications: Strong Spanish Speaking Skills Preferred

If you are interested in:
-
Working with asylees and refugees from the moment they first walk in to the EBSC until after they receive the results of their asylum application
-
Working primarily with clients from Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador whom have faced politically-motivated violence, domestic violence, or persecution because of their sexual preferences
​
Tasks:
-
Collecting basic documents and facts that are used along with comprehensive declarations created between the intern and client that explains why a client is afraid and unable to return to his or her home country
-
Serving as an interpreter during attorney and client meetings, preparing for court declarations
-
Translating Asylum Declarations

Support Services and Referral Program

Qualifications: Strong Spanish and/or Mam Skills Preferred, may be able to take up to one English speaker but would strongly prefer Spanish

Each ESL student will be paired up with a tutor who will assist them weekly according to their needs

Amplifying Sanctuary Voices (ASV)

If you are interested in:

Participating in a Oral History Project that centers the lives of refugees and immigrants

Tasks:
-
Conduct, transcribe, and/or edit oral history interviews (primarily conducted in Spanish)

Host, plan, and implement arts-based trauma-informed workshops for EBSC clients and the larger East Bay migrant community
-
Research and summarize academic articles and news pieces regarding particular countries and immigration issues for more succinct background information
-
Host and conduct advocacy workshops for willing storytellers who would like to share their story in advancing public campaigns for refugee and immigrant rights
